Updates

Hey everyone,

I know, I know...I haven't been posting much. I've been very busy! The Baltimore Book Festival went swimmingly...thanks to everyone who came out and got their very own copy of Stanley. If you haven't noticed, I've been getting a lot of reviews on amazon from happy customers...23 reviews, 22 of which are five stars!

I'm on a break from work now, so I'm doing as much editing on book two as possible. I'm hoping to release the title in the next few weeks and have the book out by New Year's. So be on the look-out!

On a non-book related note, since I'm on break I am looking forward to doing some pre-winter hiking. I'll be updating the blog with some 14er hikes and other hikes soon if you want to see some great Colorado pictures!

More fun stuff to come soon,

Dan

I'm back! Baltimore Book Festival, reviews

Hey everyone!

I need to do a better job of keeping up with everything! A week from tomorrow is the Baltimore Book Festival...come visit the tent and get your copy of Stanley!

Stanley hit his 13th 5-star review today, putting the book at 30th by average customer rating on amazon.com. Maybe you should read it and see if you agree! If you HAVE read it, please do me the honor of reviewing it on amazon and help get the word out about Stanley!

I start a break during October, and hope to get book two edited and ready to go to the editing team...still hoping to have it published by New Year's, but it will take a lot of hard work.

That's it for now! I can't wait to see if my turn-out at Baltimore is as awesome as it was in Denver!

Taste of Colorado...check. Next stop...

...the Baltimore Book Festival!

A Taste of Colorado was a huge success. Almost 200 happy readers walked away with Stanley Finnigan in their hands. I hope they love it!

Now the Baltimore Book Festival is just a short 17 days away. I will be there on Friday, September 28th in the author's tent for the whole day! Come by and visit, and you'll have a chance to win free signed copies! Just ask the Denver folks...you've got a great chance to win!

I look forward to visiting Baltimore again, were I lived in 2008-2010. Hopefully more readers will walk away with a copy of the book! See you there!

Then...October can't come soon enough. School has been CRAZY to start the year, and so book two (title to be announced soon) has been put on the back-burner for quite some time. I'll have to do some SERIOUS editing to get through it and have it ready by the new year, but I think it can be done! Here's hoping!

See you in Baltimore,

Dan

I'm Back!

Sort of.

It's been a while, I know. What's been going on with Dan?

Well, the new school year started. I've been busy busy busy getting my new group of students to work. They're great, though! Being a teacher can take up a lot of your normal blog time, though.

I've been getting ready for A Taste of Colorado, happening in Denver of Labor Day weekend. Come visit! Get a new copy of Stanley and meet me!

I moved into a new house recently, which is exciting. Yay washer-dryer!

I also started a blog for my class, and have been posting a lot of cool science links to it. What? You want to see them too? Well, of course you do! Check out some of this awesome NASA stuff:

Images from the Cassini Saturn Probe:

Images from the Hubble Space Telescope:

That's all for now. I've unfortunately had to put book two on the back burner for a while, but hope to jump back into editing once things calm down at work a little bit. Still ambitiously hoping to get it released by the New Year!

Oh, and east coasters can come find me on Friday, September 28th at the Baltimore Book Festival!

Writing sidebar: hiking

So, my summer break is wrapping up and I spent the last couple of weeks putting the sequel aside and doing some more outdoorsy things. I've done a lot of mountain biking, volleyball tournaments, and days in the park. Last Thursday, I spent the day hiking "The Decalibron," which is a 8 mile round-trip hike in the Mosquito Range. Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross mountains are four 14,000 ft peaks you summit during the hike!

Here are some pictures from the hike:
Sunrise in the valley

Sunrise over Kite Lake

Summit of Democrat

So, I have a week left of my break...time to do some more mountain biking! Check in soon for some book two updates and maybe some more pictures from the rockies!

The Universe is a BIG place.

Hey folks,

If you ever follow my twitter or facebook, you know that I'm VERY excited for the new season of "How the Universe Works" on the Science channel. It's one of my favorite shows ever, and has always given me a lot of ideas for Braderwood books...it also gives me a starting place to check some of my facts.

The new season starts today, July 11th. Here's a nice little clip from last season:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmWNs4QrshY

That clip, on youtube, is about star and galaxy size. Some of the numbers are incredible. Betelgeuse, one of the stars they talk about, is so big that it's diameter would stretch all the way out to Jupiter if it was in our own solar system! That's 1,500,000,000 times bigger than our own sun!

Galaxies are even crazier. Our galaxy is believed to have 100-200 BILLION stars. That's a lot...but then, consider the other ones that are two, three...ten...fifty times the size of our own. And astronomers believe there are 200 billion galaxies out there...and that's all we know of! That number is probably changing every day as we can see further and further into the Universe. In fact, just ten years ago, astronomers only thought there were 4 billion stars in our galaxy.

Recap...100-200 billion stars in our 100,000 light-year-across galaxy.

Oh, right. That brings me to light years. Light travels at approximately 186,000 miles a second. A SECOND! That comes out to about 671 million miles an hour...or about 6 TRILLION MILES A YEAR!

Finally, let's talk a little bit about numbers. People hear numbers like million and billion all the time...but often don't appreciate just how astronomically large those numbers are. Let's do a little experiment, shall we?

Take a pen and tap it on the desk as fast as you can for ten seconds. (As the example, I did it 70 times in ten seconds. You may be a little faster, but I had to pay attention to my watch.)

You've inherited some super-powers that allow you to tap the pen at that same exact rate without experiencing fatigue, the need to sleep...to ever stop.

Here's how the numbers would crunch:
70 times in ten seconds
x6 is 420 times a minute
x60 is 25,200 times in an hour...wow! great job. You'll be there in no time.
x24 is 604,800 in a full day
x365.25 is 220,903,200 in a full year
at that rate, it would take you approximately 4.5 straight years of your life to tap it a billion times!
and a trillion? Well, a trillion is 1,000 TIMES a billion...so it would take you 4,500 years to reach a trillion!

Looking back at our numbers, if each time you tapped your pen, you were counting a star in our galaxy, it would take you about 450 - 900 years to count each one. And that's just one galaxy out of the 200 billion we know of.

And finally, light travels 6 trillion miles a year...remember, trillion is that number that would take you 4,500 years to tap out...and our galaxy is 100,000 LIGHT YEARS across...600,000 trillion miles!

So, anyway...I hope you enjoyed the lesson. The Universe is BIG. REALLY BIG. In fact, most of it is empty space between all of those huge galaxies, accumulating in what is estimated to be 3x10^23 (that's a 3 with 23 zeros after it) stars in our 92 billion light year wide OBSERVABLE universe.

People LOVE free stuff.

Alright,

It was a very successful book giveaway day on the 7th! A TON of copies were downloaded on Kindle for free. I couldn't be happier to celebrate my birthday by getting Stanley in the hands of so many people...I just hope I get some reviews and ratings out of it!

Aside from that...still waiting to hear from another agent and I've put down book two for about a week now to "rest" a bit before diving in for some editing. Also, I am anxiously awaiting artwork from my friend Sarah.

I celebrated my birthday with a bunch of friends here in Denver. We had a belated Fourth of July party...my friend, who is the best bbq'r I've ever known, made us some delicious food. We played all kinds of yard games and volleyball, and I made a GIANT JENGA set. It was a great day/night!

As a reminder, I'll be at A Taste of Colorado over Labor Day weekend (end of August) and then the Baltimore Book Festival on September 28th. Come out and visit! You may have a chance to win a free paperback edition of Stanley and there may be some stuff to reveal about the second book...

Summer Break! Book Two! Reviews!

Hey everyone,

So...I haven't posted for a while. My internet has been dicey at best. Sorry.

Anyway, it's officially summer break in Aurora. I'm off until our new school year starts again at the end of July. I officially have my tent location for A Taste of Colorado...so that's exciting! I've enlisted the help of the very talented Sarah Barth to do my new artwork for the events and to spice up my book cover.

I'm about 70-75% through the rough draft of book two. I'm hoping to finish it during the next four or five weeks.

In addition to the book work, I'll be doing a TON of mountain biking (already gone a couple times with some friends), hiking, camping...it's going to be a great summer!

For now, it seems people are finishing reading the first book. I have a few reviews on amazon.com, but am looking for more! If you've read it, please review it on amazon and goodreads! It means a lot to me. I've had numerous people tell me they've finished and really enjoyed Stanley, but I'm still waiting for them to review it online. Here's hoping!

Thanks again everyone for the support and for picking up a copy of Stanley Finnigan and the Race Around the Universe. And if you haven't gotten a copy either in paperback or on the Kindle...get yours for summer reading!

Edward Bloor on Stanley Finnigan!

Edward Bloor, author of Tangerine and London Calling, had this to say about Stanley Finnigan and the Race Around the Universe:

It's clearly a passion project of [Cuoco's]. I think young readers with an academic bent would enjoy the weird science on the different planets and the philosophical questions raised. Its anti-bullying and acceptance of others themes are always welcome.

If you haven't checked out Tangerine, you should! It's an outstanding mystery with lots of action. I'm still waiting to hear back from some other authors, librarians, teachers, and principals to see what they think of Stanley, too! Keep checking in, and get your copy on amazon.com today!

Stanley Finnigan appearing at A Taste of Colorado!

Hey everyone! Exciting news!

I will have a booth this year at A Taste of Colorado. For those of you that don't know about the event, it takes place on Memorial Day Weekend (August 31-Sept 3). There is live music, food, art, crafts, vendors, rides...all kinds of great stuff for the whole family. I will be selling copies of Stanley Finnigan as well as having many, MANY opportunities to win FREE copies! During the weekend I'll also be revealing more book two information...don't miss out! Come see some great music, check out some awesome local artists and craftspeople, and visit me at my tent to get some sweet free stuff.

Also, I'm waiting on a bunch of reviews from librarians, teachers, principals, and authors. Hopefully those will start rolling in soon. If you have read the book and want to review it, please do so on amazon.com or goodreads.com. If you haven't picked up your copy yet and you're interested...do it! Though quite a number of adults have enjoyed the book, the intended audience is 4-6 grade kids that like humor, adventure, and science fiction.

See you Memorial Day Weekend,

Brainstorm!

Wow. So first, let me say...I LOVE car rides. I always have. For some reason, there's something about driving that helps me do all of my best thinking in the car. Stanley would be a prime example...I came up with almost the entire plot and scribbled it down on a napkin driving home to my parents' house in Connecticut when I was still living in Baltimore. Most of book two's plot also came to me while driving home from work, as well as the first chapter of book 3, which I also have already written.

The ride home today was incredible. I had one little hangnail in the ending for book two that I figured out, which helps it run into book three...and then...I figured out, in quite a bit of detail, the remaining plot for books three and four. So...I officially have a detailed synopsis for the entire Braderwood series...I just have to write it!

I'm going to type all night and get through some pretty exciting parts in book two.

Other updates...I have a number of authors, librarians, teachers, principals, superintendents, and parents that are currently reading or finishing Stanley. They will be writing reviews soon, so be on the look-out! Have you gotten your copy yet? Pick one up for summer reading!

Get it here.

Check in soon!

That's right, folks! Dan Cuoco (@StanleyFinnigan) is now on Twitter. Follow my tweets for quotes, news, and book two updates!

That's about all for now! Short and sweet, just like a tweet! One small sequel update: I'm about 2/3 through the rough draft! Yeah!

Book two update!

Now that Stanley Finnigan is done, it's back to typing! Well, not exclusively...I've been doing a lot of promotion for the first book. Denver area folks can look forward to book give-aways and signings at a Denver Outlaws game and potentially the Denver Museum of Nature and Science this summer (I hope, I hope...) Also, I'll be at the Baltimore Book Festival in September and I'm also applying to several other book festivals across the country!

Now, back to the sequel. I've been typing away this week and am officially halfway through book two. I can tell you that the working title is "The Neuroverse," but I'm keeping the narrator a secret for now. In fact, I might even keep the narrator a secret until you get your own copy...his/her name may not appear on the cover!

I'm half a chapter away from hitting the peak action...it's pretty intense! I hope you look forward to reading it.  For now, go check out Stanley Finnigan and the Race Around the Universe on amazon.com.  It's available in both Kindle and Paperback formats. You can get it here:

Also, don't forget to follow Stanley on facebook, and review the book on amazon's site or at www.goodreads.com

As always, you're welcome to send me comments or questions using the email bar at the top of the page! Thanks for checking in!

So...if you've read Stanley, go ahead and review it on goodreads!

In other news, I'm still talking to agents and publishers to have Stanley published on a large scale. While I do that, I'm working on the sequel.  As I've hinted, it will be told from the perspective of a main character, but not Stanley. I'll release the working title soon!

Don't forget to "like" Stanley Finnigan on facebook, keep checking in here for updates, and review the book on goodreads or amazon.com!  Thanks for your support!

A lot going on!

I haven't updated for a while...but there are a lot of updates!

I started my break at work yesterday, so I have the entire month of May off!  I plan on enjoying the Denver weather...mountain biking, hiking, camping, going to the park.  I'll be going home to CT for a few days to visit family and go to a friend's wedding as well!

I've taken some of the time off to take care of house chores...spring cleaning!

In Stanley news, the book is on amazon.com in paperback and is selling well! Have you bought a copy yet? A couple of very well-known authors will be reading and reviewing my book soon...so be on the look-out!

And, though not yet set in stone, Clinton Library in CT (where I'm originally from) will be displaying Stanley and including it on their recommended summer reading list! Other schools in the area are also taking a look at the book, and I might be doing a book signing or two while in CT...very exciting!

If you read the book, please feel free to submit a review to my email (at the top of this blog page) or directly on amazon.com

Finally, book two is well under way, and I plan on typing, typing, typing this summer!  My goal is to get a first draft finished by the end of the year.

That's all for now!

Dan

Stanley Finnigan: Available soon in paperback!

Hey everyone,

So my new book, Stanley Finnigan and the Race Around the Universe, was released on Amazon Kindle this past week!  The even better news is the book will be available in paperback shortly!  I can't give an exact date yet, but it will be soon. The hard copy will be going for $8.99.  I've also decided that, since it will be available in two formats, to make it available on Kindle for ONLY $3.99!  Enjoy!

Here's a product description:
Stanley Finnigan is a normal seventh grade kid in a quiet town. He has to deal with the regular stresses of middle school life, like tests, teachers, and Trevor, the school bully. Stan’s best friends, Richey and Betsy, help him get through the daily grind, but an embarrassing encounter with Trevor in Science class leaves him humiliated. To make matters worse, Bryan, the newest dork in school, is thrown into his group Science project.

Everything takes a turn for the strange when a mysterious space ship intercepts the kids on their way home from school. Stan and his friends quickly find themselves attempting to complete a week-long race through the Universe to recover four unique relics. He has to overcome furry birds, space slugs, asteroid fields, and giant robots in this life-or-death mission to return home.

Stan and his friends need to learn how to work together in order to survive the seemingly insurmountable odds set before them.

So...what have you been reading? Part II

As of this week, I've continued my pursuit of finishing the Ender saga.  I read Ender's Game a couple years ago (after a friend recommended it to me) and more recently decided to read the others.  I read Speaker for the Dead  and Xenocide within weeks of each other around the start of the new year, but decided to take a break before taking on Children of the Mind.

It's interesting to me how different (as I see them) Ender's Game and the three other books in the quartet really are.  Ender's game seemed like more of a juvenile read (this of course strictly refers to the intended audience, not the writing itself) while the rest of the series seems to be far more philosophical and written for a more adult audience.  Speaker was simply amazing.  I enjoyed Xenocide and the dual plot, but don't feel like I can truly appreciate it until I finish Children

Beyond the Ender saga, I have several other reads to take on.  A co-worker, who has also edited my own book, also recommended The Sparrow and The Golden Compass series.  I'm looking forward to reading The Sparrow after I finish Children of the Mind but am also interested in reading Stranger in a Strange Land  and Starship Troopers by Heinlein.

I can't help but find it funny that all the novels I am currently interested in are science fiction.  Of course, one might consider my own work juvenile science fiction, but my science, at least in Stanley, does not go any further than what is necessary to explain simple plot points.  The first sequel dives much deeper into current theoretical physics (as well as some of my own theories.)

Sidebar:  I also recently finished The City of Ember, the first book in the Ember series.  This book took me a while to get through.  I found the narrative style intriguing.  That is, I understood the purpose behind how simplistic it was, and almost the style alone is what kept me interested in the novel.  The plot seemed to linger, and I feel that the only way I can accept its pace is by finishing the series in order to see how it develops.  That series, I feel, will have to wait a while.

So...what have you been reading?

First Novel Updates, Second Novel Hiccups

Well, as of today it would appear that I will have the remainder of my edits back this coming week.  That means that the book will be ready to publish as soon as I have a chance to review those edits and make any corrections I feel are necessary (which I predict won't take me too long.)  Therefore, I can comfortably say that Stanley Finnigan will be published to the Kindle Store sometime in the month of March, 2012!

As for the sequel, things have moved much slower in February than they did in January.  This was due to a combination of things, really.  I was hoping to get a lot done during my work break, but had family visiting for 10 days and then, inconveniently, jury duty.  The sequel is, as written, in chapter 6 and is approximately around 80 pages.  Again, everything is planned, it's just a matter of "getting there."  That is the other factor.  I've reached a pivotal point in the plot, and considering how much attention I give to the current chapter, how much description, how much I develop the plot as I see necessary is very important.  I foresee the next chapters going much more smoothly.

I'm excited to be publishing soon, continuing work on the first sequel, and submitting the first book to agencies again this month!

Moving Right Along!

Well, the final editing stages before I can publish to Kindle have taken longer than originally planned.  That's okay!  I'd rather have precise, careful edits and comments than rushed ones.  On a more exciting note, while waiting for those edits to come in, I've been working on the sequel every night.  Since January 1st I've written about 18,000 words.  The plot is planned out in my head!  Hopefully the pieces will continue to fall into place.

If I can keep this current pace, I should be able to finish the first draft by the summer.  Fingers crossed!

I guess I can attribute some of my pace to the sad fact that it has been a terrible snow season up in the mountains, so I haven't been using every weekend to ski.  Hopefully the last few months of the season will be better.  I'll be doing my snow dance.  On a related note, I will be on a three week break from work during February and into the first week of March.  Maybe I'll get to do a lot of writing and skiing!

Book one and the sequel

Well, book one has been finished for some time now, and I'm only waiting on the changes and critiques being made by my editors.  Stanley Finnigan and the Race around the Universe is a middle-grade novel written for ten- to thirteen-year-olds who enjoy science fiction, adventure, and humor.  Hopefully it will be published on Kindle soon!

At the moment, however, I'm more excited about the sequel.  Stanley is part of a planned four book series, in which each sequel is told through the point-of-view of a different character from the first novel.  While I don't want to reveal more, I am now thirty five pages into the first sequel and am eager to "watch" the plot develop.  This second book will be exploring much more challenging themes, as well as more involved theoretical physics.

As thrilling as it is to be developing a new book for the first time in three years, I've reached my most anxious point, in which about three-fourths of the novel is planned in my brain, and I have to be patient enough to get to each part of the plot.  However, having completed the first novel, which really started as a debut, first-attempt, skeleton-like version of a book, I feel experience is helping greatly with taking the careful time and consideration to fill in all plot points and details necessary for a successful sequel.
